Two different materials solving the same core problem

Museum glass is a specially coated glass, engineered to filter out the majority of UV light (typically 97–99%) while remaining virtually invisible β€” an anti-reflective coating essentially eliminates the visible glare that makes ordinary glass hard to photograph or view under gallery lighting.

UV-filtering acrylic (often sold under trade names like Optium or TruVue Acrylic) achieves similar UV protection in a different base material β€” a lightweight, shatter-resistant plastic rather than glass, generally engineered with the same anti-reflective and UV-filtering technology at the premium end of the acrylic product line.

Weight, durability, and cost

Acrylic is significantly lighter than glass β€” often 50% or less of the weight for the same size β€” which matters considerably for large prints, where a big sheet of glass becomes genuinely heavy and harder to safely hang and ship. Acrylic is also shatter-resistant rather than fragile, an important safety and shipping consideration for large-format work.

Glass, by contrast, is more scratch-resistant than acrylic and generally doesn't require the specialized cleaning products acrylic does β€” ordinary glass cleaner can scratch high-end acrylic glazing, while acrylic requires soft cloths and acrylic-safe cleaners.

Premium UV-filtering glazing, in either material, sits at a noticeably higher price point than standard clear glass or acrylic β€” a legitimate cost, given the real protective benefit, but one worth budgeting for deliberately rather than discovering at checkout.

A simple way to decide

For a smaller or mid-sized print that will hang and stay put, museum glass is often the better choice β€” its scratch resistance means less careful handling, and weight isn't a major concern at moderate sizes.

For large-format prints, anything that will be shipped, or pieces likely to be moved and rehung over time, UV acrylic's weight and shatter-resistance advantages generally outweigh its slightly higher care requirements.

Why ordinary glass isn't a reasonable substitute

Standard picture-framing glass provides minimal UV protection β€” often filtering less than 40–50% of UV light β€” and no anti-reflective coating, meaning both the primary driver of fading and a real, ongoing viewing annoyance go largely unaddressed. For a print you've invested in archival pigment ink and cotton rag paper to protect, pairing it with basic glass undercuts a meaningful part of that investment.

This is the most common gap between a print that's genuinely archival start to finish and one that only looks archival on paper: the printing and paper choices were done right, but the framing β€” often handled separately, sometimes by a different vendor entirely β€” used standard glass because it was cheaper or more readily available, quietly reintroducing the fading risk the earlier choices were meant to prevent.

Is museum glass or UV acrylic worth the extra cost over standard glazing?

For anything you consider a genuine long-term piece β€” sold work, collected work, or anything you personally value keeping in good condition β€” yes. The UV protection alone meaningfully extends realistic display life compared to standard glazing.

Can I clean UV acrylic with regular glass cleaner?

No β€” ammonia-based glass cleaners and paper towels can scratch or cloud acrylic. Use a soft, lint-free cloth and cleaners specifically formulated for acrylic.

Does UV glazing change the color of the print underneath?

High-quality UV-filtering glazing is engineered to be optically neutral, with minimal color shift. Lower-quality UV films and coatings can introduce a slight tint, which is one reason to source glazing from a reputable manufacturer rather than the cheapest available option.
