Printing Papers

The papers
we believe
in.

Paper is not a neutral surface. Every sheet has a character — a weight, a texture, a way of receiving light — and choosing the right one is as much a part of making the work as anything that happens before the print.

A considered selection

We don't stock every paper available. We stock the papers we believe in — those that have proven themselves across years of demanding fine art and photographic printing, that meet our standards for archival longevity, color fidelity, and physical quality. Every paper in our studio has earned its place.

Our primary partners are Hahnemühle and Epson — two manufacturers whose commitment to quality, consistency, and archival performance aligns with the standards our clients expect. Between them they cover the full range of surfaces an artist or photographer could require: from deep matte cotton rag to high-gloss photographic baryta, from smooth fine art to richly textured watercolor.

The relationship between ink and paper is a system. Our printers, inks, and papers are profiled and tested together so that what you see on screen is what lands on the sheet — reliably, repeatably, every time.

"The right paper doesn't just hold an image — it completes it. Surface, weight, and texture are as much a part of the work as the image itself."
Surface types explained
Matte

Cotton rag & fine art

No surface sheen. Maximum depth in shadow areas. The classic choice for fine art, drawing, and work that will be shown under gallery lighting. Texture ranges from smooth to pronounced.

Baryta

Fibre-based photo

A semi-gloss surface that references the classic darkroom fibre-based print. Exceptional shadow detail and D-max. The preferred surface for serious photographic printing.

Gloss / Satin

High-impact photo

Maximum color saturation and contrast. A gloss or satin surface delivers the widest gamut and deepest blacks. Best for bold color work and photography intended for reproduction.

Canvas

Textured ground

A woven textile surface that references traditional painting. Available in matte and satin finishes. Suited to large-format work and images with a strong painterly quality.

Hahnemühle

Over 450 years of papermaking

Founded in 1584 in the Harz mountains of Germany, Hahnemühle is one of the oldest paper mills in the world. Their entry into digital fine art printing transformed the field: the Hahnemühle Photo Rag®, introduced in the early years of inkjet printing, established the category of smooth cotton rag papers for photographers and set a standard that the entire industry followed.

Every Hahnemühle fine art paper is made from 100% cotton, acid-free, lignin-free, and buffered for long-term stability. Their papers are certified by Wilhelm Imaging Research for longevity and are used in museum and gallery collections worldwide. The range spans from silky smooth photo surfaces to richly textured watercolor papers — each with its own distinct character and a surface that rewards careful looking.

  • Photo Rag® 308gsm Cotton · Matte The benchmark cotton rag paper for fine art and photography. Smooth, warm white, with just enough tooth to give images depth without surface distraction.
  • Photo Rag® Bright White 310gsm Cotton · Matte A cooler, brighter white version of the Photo Rag. Ideal for images where a neutral base is important to color accuracy.
  • German Etching 310gsm Cotton · Textured Matte A pronounced laid texture that references traditional intaglio printing papers. Extraordinary presence for painterly and drawn work.
  • Photo Rag® Matt Baryta 315gsm Cotton · Matt Baryta The depth and tonal richness of a baryta surface with a fully matte finish — exceptional for photographic work shown under gallery lighting where glare is a concern.
  • Photo Rag® Pearl 320gsm Cotton · Pearl A subtle pearl sheen over a cotton base — bridging the gap between fine art matte and photographic surfaces with exceptional color depth.
  • Museum Etching 350gsm Cotton · Textured Matte A heavyweight, velvety cotton rag with a soft, slightly textured surface. One of the most prized papers for fine art editions — exceptional tonal range and a surface that commands attention.
  • Photo Rag® Metallic 340gsm Cotton · Metallic A unique metallic-sheen cotton rag that adds luminosity and dimension to images. Striking for work with strong graphic quality or photographic subjects that benefit from a reflective ground.
  • Photo Rag® Baryta 315gsm Cotton · Baryta A fibre-based photographic surface on a cotton substrate. Deep blacks, wide gamut, and the luminous quality of a classic darkroom print.
  • Photo Rag® Satin 310gsm Cotton · Satin A satin-finish cotton rag paper that bridges fine art and photographic surfaces — smooth, lustrous, and beautifully suited to work that demands both color depth and material elegance.
Epson

The precision of the system

Epson's contribution to fine art printing is twofold: they make the printers we rely on, and they make papers engineered specifically for those printers. The result is a system with an unusually tight integration between ink delivery and substrate — one where the paper's coating is designed to receive Epson UltraChrome inks at the molecular level for maximum color accuracy, D-max, and longevity.

Epson's fine art and photographic papers are not commodity materials. Each is developed alongside the printer and ink systems and carries independent lightfastness ratings. Their range covers the key photographic surfaces — from ultra-premium gloss to fiber natural — and they perform with a consistency and repeatability that demanding production work requires.

  • Ultra Premium Photo Luster 240gsm Luster A fine-grain luster surface with exceptional sharpness and color saturation. The workhorse for photographic printing — reliable, consistent, and beautiful.
  • Ultra Premium Photo Gloss 260gsm Gloss Maximum D-max and color gamut. A high-gloss surface for bold, saturated images where impact is the priority.
  • Cold Press Bright 305gsm Fine Art · Textured A textured cotton fine art paper with a bright white base. Excellent for work that references drawing or watercolor traditions.
  • Hot Press Bright 305gsm Fine Art · Smooth A smooth, hot-pressed cotton fine art surface. Clean, precise image rendering on a bright, neutral white ground.
Choosing a paper

We'll help you decide

Selecting a paper is not always straightforward. The same image can read very differently on a cool bright white versus a warm natural, on a smooth surface versus a textured one, on a matte versus a baryta. Sometimes the right choice is obvious from the nature of the work. Sometimes it requires a proof — or two.

We offer paper samples for clients who want to feel the options before committing, and we print hard proofs as standard for any production run where color accuracy is critical. If you're unsure where to start, tell us about the work — the image, the subject, the intended display environment — and we'll make a recommendation based on years of experience matching prints to papers.

No paper selection is wrong if it serves the work. But the best one will make the print feel inevitable — as if no other surface could have been the right choice.
