Color space confusion causes more printing disappointment than almost any other technical issue. Here's what these three profiles actually cover, and a straightforward way to decide between them.

A color space is a boundary, not a quality setting

A color space defines the total range of colors a file can represent β€” think of it as a boundary drawn around a portion of all visible color. Choosing a wider color space doesn't automatically make an image more colorful; it just means more of the full range of possible colors is available to be used, if your source image and editing actually reach that far.

This matters for printing because your printer, ink, and paper combination is also only capable of reproducing a certain gamut of color β€” and that gamut doesn't perfectly match any single screen-based color space. ProPhoto RGB is wider still, encompassing colors beyond both human vision limits in some regions and most output devices' capabilities. A simple decision path

If you're not confident your entire workflow β€” camera, editing software, monitor β€” is properly color-managed, sRGB is the safe default; it will print accurately even in an uncalibrated pipeline, just without access to the widest possible gamut.

If you shoot RAW, edit in professional software (Photoshop, Lightroom, Capture One), and have at least a reasonably calibrated monitor, Adobe RGB is generally the best delivery format for giclΓ©e printing β€” wide enough to matter, safe enough not to introduce conversion errors.
