The single biggest predictor of a disappointing print isn't the printer, the paper, or the ink — it's a file that wasn't prepared correctly before it ever left your computer. Here's what actually matters.

300 DPI is a rule of thumb, not a law

Print resolution is measured in dots per inch (DPI) at the final output size — not the resolution your camera or scanner captured. A file that's 300 DPI at 8×10 inches has a very different pixel count than the same file printed at 24×30 inches, even though "300 DPI" appears in both cases.

300 DPI is the traditional benchmark for prints viewed at close range — a few feet or less. For large-format work meant to be viewed from further back, such as a 40-inch-wide canvas print hung on a wall, 150–200 DPI is often visually indistinguishable from 300 because viewing distance naturally increases with print size.

The pixel dimension formula

Required pixels = desired print size (inches) × target DPI. A 16 × 20 inch print at 300 DPI needs 4,800 × 6,000 pixels.

Why the wrong color profile flattens your image

Every digital image is tagged with a color space — a defined range of colors it can represent. sRGB is the smallest common space, built for screens and web use. Adobe RGB covers a noticeably wider range, particularly in greens and cyans. ProPhoto RGB is wider still, covering colors beyond what most printers or even human vision can fully register.

For professional giclée printing, Adobe RGB is generally the sweet spot: wide enough to capture most of what a good pigment printer can reproduce, without the color-management complications ProPhoto can introduce if your software isn't fully set up for it. Sending an sRGB file to print isn't wrong, but it may leave color on the table your printer is capable of reproducing.

Matching your file to standard print dimensions

Working backward from a target print size — rather than just exporting at whatever resolution your source file happens to be — avoids the most common last-minute scramble: discovering your file is too small the day before you wanted to order.

What actually happens when a file is too small

Upscaling software can enlarge a low-resolution file, but it's generating new pixel data through interpolation — essentially an educated guess about what should be between the pixels you actually captured. Modern AI-assisted upscaling has gotten genuinely good at this, but it's still a reconstruction, not a recovery of detail that was never there.

The visible result of printing a file that's meaningfully under-resolved isn't usually blur in the traditional sense — it's soft edges, a slightly "smeared" quality in fine detail, and sometimes visible pixelation in high-contrast areas. A good print studio will flag this before printing rather than after, which is exactly the kind of file review that's part of what you're paying for.

Resolution requirements scale with viewing distance, not print size alone — a mural-sized print viewed from across a room needs far less DPI than a small print held in your hand.
Common questions

My camera shoots in sRGB. Do I need to convert to Adobe RGB?

You can shoot in sRGB and still get excellent prints — the difference matters most for saturated colors near the edge of the sRGB gamut. If your editing software supports it, working in and exporting as Adobe RGB gives your printer more color information to work with.

What file format should I send for printing?

TIFF is the professional standard — lossless and widely supported. High-quality JPEG (minimal compression) is acceptable for most work. Avoid heavily compressed JPEGs, which introduce visible artifacts that become more obvious at large print sizes.

Is it better to send a file too large than too small?

Generally yes — a print studio can downsample a larger file with no quality loss, but can't recover detail from an undersized one. That said, extremely oversized files just slow down file transfer and processing without adding benefit beyond your target print size.
