Print shops throw around numbers like "100-year print" and "200-year archival rating." Here's what those numbers really mean, where they come from, and β€” more usefully β€” what's actually in your control.

What a longevity number is really measuring

A stated print longevity β€” say, "prints rated to last 100 years" β€” comes from accelerated light-fastness testing, most commonly conducted by Wilhelm Imaging Research. Samples are exposed to intensified light under controlled conditions and the rate of fading is measured, then mathematically extrapolated to estimate how long the same fading would take under normal indoor display.

The rating is specific to a combination: this exact ink set, on this exact paper, under a defined display condition (typically moderate indoor lighting, glazed, away from direct sun). Change any one variable β€” a different paper, unglazed display, direct sunlight β€” and the real number moves, sometimes dramatically.

Four variables that matter more than the rating on the box

Ink chemistry sets the ceiling: pigment ink on archival paper is capable of the 100–200 year ratings you'll see quoted. But the ceiling only holds if the other variables cooperate.

Light exposure is the single biggest accelerant of fading in the real world. Direct sunlight can fade even a well-rated print far faster than the lab number suggests, because UV intensity in a sunlit window vastly exceeds typical indoor gallery lighting.

Humidity and temperature swings stress both the ink and the paper fiber, and can encourage mold growth in extreme cases. Air pollutants β€” smoke, cooking fumes, ozone from some electronics β€” chemically interact with ink pigments over time and are an underrated cause of premature fading.

The choices that actually change your print's lifespan

Framing behind UV-filtering glass or acrylic blocks the largest single source of accelerated fading. Keeping prints out of direct sun exposure β€” even with UV glazing β€” extends life further, since UV filtering reduces but doesn't eliminate ultraviolet transmission.

Stable indoor climate, moderate humidity, and archival mounting and matting materials round out the picture. None of these are exotic requirements; they're the same conservation basics museums have used for decades, just applied to a print you're hanging at home or in a studio.

It's worth being honest about the limits of accelerated aging tests. They're extrapolations built from a relatively short real-time exposure window, run under a single standardized lighting condition that may not match where your print actually hangs. A rating of 200 years is a scientifically grounded estimate, not a guarantee stamped on a warranty card.

The practical takeaway for a working artist or photographer isn't to distrust the rating β€” it's to treat it as a best-case number that assumes you're doing your part. Pigment ink and archival paper buy you the potential for a print that outlasts you; UV glazing, sensible placement, and stable framing are what actually cash that potential in.
