Pigment vs. Dye Ink: Why Archival Prints Require Pigment

Every inkjet print is made with one of two fundamentally different ink chemistries. Understanding the difference explains almost everything about why some prints fade in a sunny room within a year and others are rated to outlast the person who bought them.

Two different ways of putting color on paper

Dye-based ink is a coloring agent fully dissolved in a liquid carrier. When it's printed, the dye molecules soak into the paper fiber and bond at a molecular level, which is part of why dye prints can look exceptionally vibrant and saturated straight off the printer.

Pigment-based ink, by contrast, is made of solid color particles suspended — not dissolved — in the liquid. Those particles sit on the surface of the paper fiber rather than soaking into it, encapsulated in a resin that helps them adhere and resist water and abrasion. This structural difference is the entire reason pigment prints last so much longer.

What actually causes a print to fade

Fading happens when UV light and airborne pollutants break down the chemical bonds holding color molecules together. Dye molecules are small and chemically exposed, so they degrade relatively quickly under light — noticeable fading in a sunlit room can appear within a few years.

Pigment particles are physically larger and more chemically inert, and the resin encapsulation shields them further. Independent accelerated-aging tests by Wilhelm Imaging Research have rated top pigment inksets on acid-free paper at 100 to 200+ years of display life under normal indoor lighting conditions — an order of magnitude beyond dye.

What you give up, and what you keep

Modern pigment inks have largely closed the gap that used to exist in color gamut and saturation. Early pigment sets in the 1990s and early 2000s did look duller than dye, particularly in deep blacks and vivid reds, but successive generations from Epson and Canon have expanded that gamut significantly.

Dye still has a narrow edge for certain glossy, high-saturation commercial photo prints where longevity isn't the priority — think retail photo lab prints meant to be replaced or aren't meant for long-term display. For anything intended to be sold, collected, framed, or passed down, pigment is the only serious choice.

Print longevity numbers aren't marketing estimates — they come from accelerated aging tests pioneered by Henry Wilhelm, who has spent decades exposing printed samples to controlled, intensified UV light and measuring the rate of color-density loss, then extrapolating that rate to normal indoor display conditions.

It's worth understanding what the rating actually measures: it's the estimated time before a print shows noticeable fading, not the point at which it disappears entirely. A rating of 100 years means a conservator would expect visible density loss to begin around then under gallery-typical lighting — with proper UV-filtering glazing and controlled light, real-world results often exceed the lab estimate.

A pigment print stored and displayed correctly is one of the most stable, non-photographic color reproduction methods that currently exists.
Common questions

How can I tell if a print was made with pigment or dye ink?

Visually, it's difficult — both can look excellent fresh off the printer. The reliable way is to ask the print shop directly which ink system their printer uses, or check the printer model. Professional large-format Epson and Canon fine art printers almost universally use pigment ink; most home inkjet printers use dye.

Will pigment ink ever fully match dye for color vibrancy?

It's very close today. The color gamut of current-generation pigment inksets covers the vast majority of what dye can achieve, and for most subject matter the difference is imperceptible to the eye.

Does pigment ink cost more to print with?

Yes, meaningfully — pigment cartridges and the printers built around them cost more than dye systems. That cost is one of the main reasons archival giclée printing carries a higher price than consumer photo printing.
