"Archival paper" gets used loosely in the print industry. The term actually rests on a small set of measurable chemical properties β and knowing them will help you evaluate any paper a print shop offers you.
Where acid in paper comes from
Most conventional paper is made from wood pulp, which contains lignin β a natural polymer that gives trees their rigidity. Lignin is chemically unstable and breaks down over time into acidic byproducts, which is why old newsprint yellows and becomes brittle within a matter of years.
That acid doesn't stay put. It migrates through the paper and can even transfer into adjacent materials β mat board, mounting tissue, or a neighboring print in a stack. Acid degradation is progressive and, past a certain point, irreversible.
Acid-free, lignin-free, and buffered aren't the same thing
Acid-free means the paper has a neutral or slightly alkaline pH (generally 7.0 or above) at the time it's manufactured. It's a snapshot measurement, not a lifetime guarantee β paper can start acid-free and still acidify over decades if it contains lignin.
Lignin-free means the wood-pulp lignin has been removed during manufacturing, or the paper is made from cotton or another non-wood fiber that never contained it. This addresses the source of future acidification, not just the current pH.
Buffered paper has an alkaline reserve β typically calcium carbonate β added during production. This buffer actively neutralizes acid that migrates in from the environment or from adjacent materials over time, extending protection well beyond the paper's own starting chemistry.

Cotton rag, alpha-cellulose, and why they win
The gold standard for archival fine art paper is 100% cotton rag β paper made from cotton linters rather than wood pulp, which contains no lignin at all and has been used in conservation and printmaking for centuries before inkjet printing existed.
Alpha-cellulose papers are a strong second tier: wood-derived but heavily purified to remove lignin, offering archival stability at a lower cost than cotton. Both are typically rated for 100+ years of stability when paired with pigment ink and displayed under reasonable conditions.
Why a buffer matters more than people think
Acid-free and lignin-free properties describe what's already inside the paper. A buffer describes what happens to threats coming from outside it β and in a real framing or storage environment, that's often the bigger risk. Air pollutants, adhesives, non-archival mat board, and even the wood backing of a cheap frame can all introduce acid that migrates into your print over years.
This is why conservation framers insist on acid-free, buffered mat board and backing even when the print itself is on excellent paper. A buffered system is really a closed environment: the paper, mat, and mounting materials are all chosen to protect each other, not just to look right on day one.
Is 'acid-free' printer paper from an office supply store archival?
Not usually. Most inexpensive 'acid-free' copy paper is wood-pulp based and only acid-free at the time of manufacture β it lacks the buffering and lignin-free processing that genuine archival stock has, and it isn't formulated for fine art inkjet printing.
Does archival paper cost significantly more?
Yes, typically. Cotton rag fine art papers run several times the cost of standard photo paper, largely due to the raw material and manufacturing process. For work you intend to sell or keep long-term, it's generally considered worth the difference.
Can a non-archival print be 'saved' later by reframing it archivally?
Reframing with archival materials will stop further acid damage from migrating in, but it won't reverse degradation that has already occurred in the paper itself. Prevention matters more than correction here.
